2016 CYS Basketball Tournament
Welcome to the 30th Annual CYS Invitational Basketball Tournament. Thank you for joining us this year for a couple of fun-filled weekends of friendly competition, good food, and camaraderie.
Can you believe that the San Jose Japanese Community Youth Service (CYS) has been around for over 50 years? What started as a small Nikkei community organization that emphasized community service and fun activities for the kids of the Japanese American community has grown to encompass not only those of Japanese American descent but also members of the general community in which we live, work, and play. CYS is able to thrive and continue because of the efforts and passion of our membership and that of the community in which we reside. The CYS Basketball Invitational is an unique showcase of the community spirit by bringing various youth sports organizations together to play some good basketball, display good sportsmanship, and create lasting memories.
This CYS Basketball Invitational would not happen without the hard work and support of the parents and community volunteers. Big thanks to Mindy Connors for running the show as well as our Basketball Commissioners: semi-retired Russ Hiroto, Keith Wong, Scott Hashiguchi, and Tracey Matsui without whom the CYS Basketball Program would not have continued so successfully; and countless parents and other volunteers to keep the event running smoothly. Please join me in thanking all of the volunteers for their efforts.
For the returning families, great to see you back. For the new families, I hope to see you again next year. Good luck to all of the players. Now let’s play some ball!

Tournament Dedication -Amy Furukawa
Welcome to the 30th Annual CYS Invitational Basketball Tournament. Thank you for joining us this year for a couple fun-filled weekends of friendly competition, good food, and camaraderie.
Every year the CYS Tournament selects an individual to honor who represents the organization by exemplifying its core values of volunteer work, community service, and working to support youth programs. This year's recipient has been involved in numerous community organizations and programs over the years. She has served on the board of Nakayoshi Gakko for years in various positions including president. She is currently on the board with Nikkei Matsuri and is a legal consultant to a high tech company in Silicon Valley.
She has been a part of CYS for almost a decade and has served on the board for 8 years. She has stepped up to lead the organization as president for the past 3 years. She took over when the past president had to step down due to work related responsibilities and has been responsible for overseeing the transformation of the board. She was instrumental in bringing new ideas and her no nonsense approach gets things done quickly and efficiently.....board meetings are now completed in less than an hour!
We would like to dedicate this year's tournament to Amy Furukawa. Both her children (Lauren and Jory) have gone through the program and her husband (Jun) has also been supportive of the program throughout the years. Thank you to the Furukawa family for their continued support of CYS and especially Amy for her tireless efforts to lead CYS into the future.
